Carpentry
Sennet is in carpentry this year, as one of his after-school activities.
Originally he said he wanted to do it, so Stacie signed him up, and then when it was about to begin, he began whining about it and saying he didn’t want to do it. He even told Olive (classmate) that “his mom is making him do it.”
Well after the first session (it’s every Wednesday), it was all he could talk about. He loved it. All he wanted to do that night was talk about carpentry. He wouldn’t even let me go back downstairs after I took him up to bed because he kept saying, “Wait, I want to keep talking about carpentry!”
He chose an army tank as his first project. He built it from scratch – picking out the blocks of wood, drawing his cut lines, sawing it, drilling it, gluing it, and finally painting it.
Now that he’s finished his tank, he’ll begin on another project next week. He says that carpentry is what he wants to do when he grows up. (I guess that’s in addition to baking cupcakes, playing professional baseball, studying volcanoes and pyramids, and flying Army jets… he’s sort of a renaissance man.)
As an aside: Stacie is one of the volunteers for the after school activity programs. She has to be there every so often to make sure things run smoothly. One evening she was there, talking to another parent. They were asking each other whose kid they belong to, and when the lady found out Stacie was Sennet’s mom she lit up. Her son is in kindergarten and told her that at recess one kid (Kenny) is really mean to her son and won’t let him join in games and stuff. She said that Sennet always sticks up for her son and tells him that he can play and doesn’t let Kenny bully him. Yay, Sennet!
