I took Sennet down to Medgar Evers Indoor Pool this morning to swim during the open Family Swim hour (10-11am). He did amazing! He grabbed a foam noodle, put it under his arms, and just started kicking across the pool! I was flabbergasted! He used the noodle to ‘swim’ around the pool for probably 35 minutes – without me touching him once. Finally we swam over to a ball and he wanted me to lift him up to shoot hoops at the poolside basket. Then we did a bunch of jumps into the pool from the side. We really need to get him back into swimming lessons – he was basically swimming today. (Since we were swimming I obviously couldn’t get any pictures, so I had him grab the foam noodle after we got dressed to snap a few.)
Right outside the pool is a playground, and he wanted to ride the merry-go-round and slide a few times before we went home. At the playground near our house there are rings that the bigger kids go hand by hand across from one side of the jungle gym to the other. Sennet has always wanted to do it, but just hasn’t quite been able to make it across. The playground by the pool had rings that were a bit closer together. He climbed up them and just scooted across. Again, I was amazed at his athleticism at this age. So much for getting picked last on the playground, eh Doc?

It was a wonderful, sunny autumn day in Seattle and I took Sennet to a park we had never been to before. There is a long tunnel that bikes use to connect to the I-90 bridge. The fall colors were wonderful and the light was so yummy!

All in all, it was a success. We went to see Frankenweenie, a black and white animation film by Tim Burton. Click here for a preview.
I didn’t know much about the movie but it is pretty much the only kids movie playing at the moment and I just thought it would be fun to take Sennet to his first movie so it is the one we saw.
The movie was a bit morbid: dog dies, dog comes back to life, kids almost die in a fire, huge people-eating turtle, etc. There were some cool nods to old horror movies like Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein and Godzilla but it wasn’t the best kids movie I have ever seen. Not awful- just not special or great.
Sennet was a bit surprised by how loud it was and during the previews kept saying “its too loud.” We had given him the rules of the theater beforehand (stay in your seat, no talking, etc but I hadn’t thought to tell him it would be loud.)
About 15 minutes into the movie he dropped the bag of popcorn and spent the next 15-20 minutes laying on the ground eating the popcorn off the floor. I tried to get him back in his seat but he was going to lose it big time if I forced the issue. The alternative was to leave the movie with Sennet kicking and screaming or let him eat popcorn off the floor- I’m pretty ok with popcorn off the floor.
He had a few times where he was talking really loud (like when the kids almost die in the fire and he said “you have to listen or you will die in the fire”- which stems from a recent fire drill they had at school so the timing of this is interesting).
He actually did really great and he eats popcorn like Kevin! Except Kevin doesn’t eat it off the floor.
which means riding the zipline and mommy practicing with the camera- much to Sennet’s annoyment!
