I took some video of Sennet riding his old BMX-style bike earlier this year around Lake Washington. We went out on one of the weekends in April, where they close the street off to cars so families can ride. I never got around to uploading it before.
After ride burrito on the dock.
And then a short one with his new birthday bike, the 24-inch 8-speed, from back in June.
One of Sennet’s favorite baseball players (outside of the Mariners, of course) is David Ortiz (Big Papi) of the Boston Red Sox. Ortiz is retiring after this season (his 19th). Last week we got tickets to the second game of the Sox 4-night series with us on August 2nd. Pretty good seats, down the first base line a few rows up.
The Mariners had lost the first game, and weren’t looking good for the second. We were down 0-4 going into the eighth inning. Catcher Mike Zunino started things off for us with a solo home run. Then we had 3 straight singles, including an RBI single by Guillermo Heredia that drove in Martin. Then Robinson Cano came up to bat and belted a 3-run homer and just like that we were suddenly up 5-4. Top of the ninth we had our new closer, Edwin Diaz come in and struck out all three batters – game over!
The next day one of Stacie’s co-workers said she’d sell us her tickets for that night’s game, so we decided to do two nights in a row. These seats were even better, down the third base side, several rows back, right where the ball-girl sits. This game wasn’t as nerve-wracking, as Adam Lind, Nelson Cruz, and Mike Zunino (again!) all hit solo home runs, in the 2nd, 6th, and 7th innings respectively. Our Pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma threw 7-1/3 innings and got the win, after Diaz came in again the ninth and got the save. Mariners 3-1 over the Sox.
Sennet is over dad taking pictures at all the games…
A couple weekends ago Sennet and I went hiking up to the Little Si summit on Sunday morning. Nice quick hike, finally getting around to posting some pictures.
And we stopped on the way down to watch some rock climbers repelling down a cliff.
Yes, we went to another Mariners’ game last week. The M’s were playing the Chicago White Sox and a client of Stacie’s had two tickets that they couldn’t use. Per our modus operandi, we took the light rail down to the stadium from Beacon Hill and found out we had great seats. Upper deck, right above the Mariners’ dugout.
It turned out to be a mostly lack-luster game for the Mariners – great pitching from the White Sox pitcher, Chris Sale (yes, that Chris Sale) had the Sox up on us 3-0 going into the bottom of the ninth inning. We usually like to stay through the end of the games, but I did ask Sennet if he wanted to stay or go, since it was close to 10pm by this time. He said he wanted to stay, and I’m so glad we did.
Franklin Gutierrez singled off the Sox closer, and Robinson Cano hit into a fielder’s choice forceout. After a Nelson Cruz walk and a Dae-Ho Lee strikeout got Seattle down to its final out, Kyle Seager singled in a run. Then Adam Lind came to the plate. Bottom of the ninth, down 3-1, two men on and two outs. On the second pitch of his at-bat Lind rocked a 92mph cutter over the wall in right center field!
Game over, walk-off 3-run home run: Mariners 4-3 over the White Sox. It was pretty amazing. I’d never personally been to baseball game and seen a walk-off anything live. The whole crowd went nuts and we danced and cheered for a good 15 or 20 minutes before we finally began making our way out of the ballpark, but not before stopping for a selfie in front of the field. Great time!
Seattle Mariner’s all-star pitcher Felix Hernandez has been on the DL (disabled list) since April with an injured leg. He’s been rehabbing and is almost ready to begin pitching for the Mariners again. Part of that rehab is pitching at the AA and AAA clubs for the Mariners. Sennet and I bought tickets to see the Tacoma Rainiers, Seattle’s Triple-A club, on Friday when Felix was pitching.
We drove down to Tacoma and had dinner at a little Puerto Rican place (OSJ International) that was recommended to me by co-workers – it was delish. Sennet had quesadilla and rice & beans that he kept commenting on how good they were. I had Mofongo with fried pork – which I had never tried before. It’s an Afro-Puerto Rican dish made with mashed green plantains that had chicharrĂ³ns, olive oil, broth, and garlic. It was great.

Then we drove over to Cheney Field to take in the game. The tickets included free Felix shirts, but by the time we got to where they had them, they only had large and XXL. Sennet will have to wait a few years to grow into his. They also gave out signs to hold up, on one side it said “We R Felix” with the Rainiers R logo as the R, and on the back side a “K” to hold up when he threw a strikeout.
The Rainiers won 4-1 with a two-run homer and a double that scored two runs. Felix looked good, pitched about 6 innings, gave up one home run, and got the win. A couple other Mariners were playing for the Rainiers also, as part of getting back to the majors – catcher Mike Zunino and outfielder Nori Aoki – so Sennet was very excited to see them too.
In between innings as the teams run off the field, they flip the ball into the stands to a fan. At the end of the second inning Sennet ran down behind the dugout and held his glove up and when the player flipped the ball he jumped and caught it in his mitt right in front of a guy. People yelled, “Great grab, kid!” He was beaming from ear-to-ear!
It was a beautiful night, about 72 degrees, and sunny until the sun went down. And we didn’t realize that it was fireworks night! So after the game we stayed to watch the very decent fireworks show. That’s two ballpark fireworks shows we’ve made it to this year.
