Sennet has dealt with eating Paleo really well- not sure he notices a difference. He is staying up a bit later now thanks to daylight savings(read sarcasm) and we are trying to have him eat what we eat during family meal time. So far he has chowed down on tilapia lettuce wrap tacos, meatballs with cauliflower mash, pecan crusted baked chicken and eaten it all with a smile. We haven’t totally cut dairy out for him but he seems to love almond milk so we will switch him to that full-time, but I think a bit of string cheese and cottage cheese will remain in his diet unless we see “gut” problems. We have cut his wheat intake back as well but not totally. We haven’t made any changes to his food at school other than I am trying to make sure he has a balanced breakfast with protein and fruit at home (with no wheat). Of course he eats dinner at home and because we are eating better- so is he.
Below are photos of a favorite paleo snack- apples and unsweetened almond butter with cinnamon sprinkles.
After months (maybe even years) of feeling sluggish at best and depressed at worst, I took a hard look at myself and decided I (we) needed to get in shape and eat better. I have also had a lingering cough that has endured three rounds of antibiotics and steroids and the cough won handily.
A friend mentioned the Paleo Diet (lifestyle really) and I looked at a bunch of stuff online and it really makes sense to me. I’m not an expert but the general theory is you eat like a caveman. Lots of lean meat and seafood (organic and grass-fed for the meat and not farm raised for the seafood), most fruits and vegetables and most nuts. For me, what you don’t eat is more the issue- no sugar (other than natural sugars in fruit), no dairy, no wheat (or any grain really), no legumes (peanuts, peas, etc). There is more to it but these are the basics.
Today is day 11 with no sugar- and those of you that know me know that is a miracle! Not a coke, not a cupcake, not any anything with added sugar! I haven’t cut out dairy because I have coffee in the morning and I can barely stomach it without milk. Many people who find the Paleo diet find it because they have terrible gut problems like Celiac, etc with foods that are omitted with Paleo. I don’t really have those issues but am working towards removing milk too.
I have more energy and my brain is a little less fuzzy and I’m overall not so sad but that could just be because we also haven’t had one drop of wine or booze in 11 days either. Sadly, I haven’t lost a pound (and I have more than several to lose) but waking up and not dreading the day is a good feeling and a huge benefit. The cough is pretty much gone too….
Many people who adopt the Paleo lifestyle do an 80/20 balance. I think we are going to try that after the 30 day “trial.” We have a trip planned to see Kevin’s mom after a little less than three weeks on the Paleo plan so I know we will stray- I think the plan is to (re)start the 30 days of strict Paleo when we get back home and then try the 80/20 balance. I hope to remove milk by then too!
The pictures below are of Sennet helping me make Paleo approved fruit and nut bars (dates, cashews, unsweetened coconut and dried cherries) and homemade pecan/cashew butter- yum!”
Yesterday it was a nice sunny day so we went to Seward Park. Fed some ducks, rode the zipline, etc. While in line for the zipline he pointed to a very obviously pregnant woman’s stomach and said “big belly” and I said “there is a baby in there and that is why she has a big belly” and later near the swings he point to a woman (not obvious she was pregnant but not obvious she wasn’t and he said “big belly, baby in there” and the lady snarled “no, I’m just fat” and Sennet pointed at her and said “big belly”….when should I have the conversation with him about NEVER asking a woman if she is pregnant??? SHEESH!

Conversation during bath time:
Sennet: uh-oh
me: uh-oh what?
Sennet looking down: shark ate my penis (slight pause) bad shark!
and indeed his penis was “lost” in the sharks mouth.
Me: I really don’t like you hanging on me (while trying to cook dinner or anytime really)
Sennet: I like hanging on you
Me: (very annoyed) Why do you like to hang on me?
Sennet: Because you no like it.
No photo for this little gem of a conversation.

This little magnetic gumby thingy that Aunt D sent a while back gave Sennet a good hour of entertainment the other day when it was really crappy outside. He was fascinated by the way the magnet worked.
Sennet: how a magnet work?
Me: I don’t really know but we can look it up
Sennet: what you mean look it up?
Me: I will look it up online
Sennet: or ask daddy he knowed it
Great- he already thinks Kevin knows everything.
The above few photos are the result of the magnet not sticking to things like the wall and books, etc. He wanted gumby to stick to everything and was really frustrated by my lack of being able to explain why it wouldn’t stick to everything.
And finally I found something to distract him from Gumby
