Speech Therapist part two
Kevin and I met had a 2nd evaluation with a different language clinic. This time there was an actual speech therapist present so she was able to complete both phases of the evaluation used to determine whether or not Sennet is delayed 25% or more and therefore qualifying for grant monies to help offset the cost of therapy. Both comprehension of language and expression of language are evaluated. The first evaluation was based on comprehension of language along with motor skills etc and she did not find him delayed. The 2nd therapist agreed that Sennet is not delayed in comprehension but since she was able to test expression as well, she did find him delayed by 30% on expression. While you never want to hear your child is delayed, in this case if he is delayed you want to hear by 25% or more so we will get some grant assistance for the therapy. The next step is to meet with an occupational therapist so that his motor, physical, social and/or adaptive skills can be evaluated (part of the process to qualify for grant assistance). We are not worried about any of these areas other than social- and the only reason this is an issue is because he gets frustrated in social settings because he is not able to vocalize what he wants. The next appointment is in two weeks. In the meantime, Sennet seems to be picking up new words everyday and now he will pretty much pick up any sign I show him after one time. The only problem is that I can’t learn them as fast as him. Everyone we have spoken to does not think we should discontinue signing with Sennet as they do not believe it delays comprehension of language.
